Why A Pilot?
The Canvas New Quizzes tool is not yet complete, and as such does not contain its intended full list of features yet. However, even when the tool is complete, some features found in Classic Quizzes will be lost. For a detailed list of New Quizzes features, please see this feature comparison page.
Because online assessment is a key component of the Canvas Learning Management System, the successful transition to New Quizzes is very important to us. For those interested in using the tool now, we would like to offer you the chance to join the pilot. As part of this pilot, you will be instrumental in gauging the hurdles the rest of the campus may navigate as we move closer to turning on New Quizzes for all UCI Canvas users.
As a member of the pilot, we will reach out to you occasionally to gather feedback on your experiences. This will help us prepare help documentation and training resources, as well as useful feedback we can direct to Instructure, the company that makes Canvas.
If you’re still interested in piloting New Quizzes, please take the short survey below to let us know who you are, and how you plan on using the new quizzing tool in your courses.

Who Is New Quizzes Pilot For?
Because New Quizzes is still in development, we are encouraging Canvas-savvy users who are feeling adventurous to give the tool a try. We would love to hear your feedback so that we can update our support documentation and training efforts, as well as share improvement ideas with Instructure (makers of Canvas). For now, we are recommending that you use New Quizzes only on low-stakes assignments, exams, or quizzes.
New Features
- A more modern interface
- The ability to set accommodations for students in all quizzes at the same time
- Create A New Quiz using Hot Spot Questions, Ordering Questions , and Categorization Questions
- Create multiple questions based on a single Stimulus Content prompt
- Easily duplicate an individual question in a quiz
- Set an overall quiz score that differs from the sum total of question points
Known Issues
Students are able to view their New Quizzes scores even if scores have not been released to them under a Manual Grade Post Policy.
By default, students are able to navigate back to the New Quiz and see their submission along with the score for any automatically graded quiz questions. To prevent this, turn on Restrict student results view in your quiz’s settings. This should keep them from seeing their score before you post the grades.
For more information, please see the following Canvas guide:
How do I restrict students from viewing quiz results in New Quizzes?
Bulk download of File Upload question submissions is not possible in New Quizzes
The ability to bulk download a zip file containing all File Upload question submissions is currently not possible with New Quizzes. This means that you will need to download each student submission one at a time. This feature is a noted parity gap with Classic Quizzes. At the time of writing this, Instructure has not stated if/when this feature will make its way into New Quizzes, but has been brought up by the Canvas community as a needed feature.
Because of this, we do not recommend using New Quizzes in conjunction of File Upload questions if bulk download is needed in your grading process.
